IGCSE fees can hit Rs 14 lakh a year: what parents are actually paying for

IGCSE schools in Indian cities can charge up to Rs 14 lakh a year, making fees the biggest factor in whether parents choose the curriculum.

For most Indian families weighing whether to enrol their child in an IGCSE school, the conversation usually ends at one number: the fee. CBSE and ICSE schools can range from a few thousand rupees a year to a few lakhs, depending on the city and the school’s positioning, but IGCSE schools are routinely among the priciest in the country.

In cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, annual fees for IGCSE schools can run anywhere from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 14 lakh, depending on the grade and the facilities on offer. For a huge number of families, that number alone settles the debate, no matter how good the curriculum sounds on paper.

IGCSE, or the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, is a curriculum offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education and followed in schools across more than 160 countries, with the number of schools offering Cambridge programmes steadily growing in Indian cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. Unlike CBSE and ICSE, which are based on the Indian education system, IGCSE is an international curriculum — though children still study maths, science, languages and social sciences, just taught with more emphasis on explaining thinking and solving real-life problems than on memorisation.

Cambridge IGCSE is recognised by universities across the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Singapore and many other countries, and also holds recognised equivalence in India. But CBSE or ICSE students are not at any real disadvantage when applying abroad either — foreign universities admit students from all three boards every year, and the board on a report card ultimately matters far less than most parents assume.
