Haryana just made it easier for backward class students to chase top marks: here’s how to claim up to Rs 12,000

Students from Haryana’s Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes, Nomadic, De-notified and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Vimukt Jaati and Tapriwas Jaati communities who scored high marks in their board or university exams now have a direct route to a cash reward. The Dr. Ambedkar Medhavi Chattar Sansodhit Yojna, run by the Haryana government, pays meritorious students from class 11 through postgraduate level between Rs 8,000 and Rs 12,000 a year, with the exact amount depending on the qualifying exam and the marks obtained.

Eligibility is split by category and by whether the student studies in a rural or urban area. Students from Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, Nomadic, DNT, Semi-Nomadic, Vimukt Jaati and Tapriwas Jaati communities qualify with 70% marks in matric for urban candidates or 60% for rural candidates, 75% at the 10+2 level for urban students or 70% for rural students, and 65% at graduation level for urban students or 60% for rural students. Students from Backward Classes Block ‘A’ need 70% marks in matric if urban or 60% if rural, while those from Backward Classes Block ‘B’ need 80% if urban or 75% if rural. Meritorious students from other social classes are also covered, judged against the same Block ‘B’ benchmark of 80% urban or 75% rural at the matric level.

Applications can be filed either online or offline. For the online route, students first read the scheme guidelines on the Haryana Backward Classes and Economically Weaker Sections Welfare department website, then head to the Saral Haryana portal to register with their personal details and set up a login. Once registered, applicants log in, select the Dr. Ambedkar Medhavi Chattar Sansodhit Yojna option, click Apply Online, fill out the form and upload the required documents before submitting. Those who prefer the offline process can download the application form from the official website, complete it by hand, attach the same set of documents and submit it directly to their district’s welfare office.

Six documents are needed to complete either application: an income certificate, a caste certificate, the academic marksheet from the qualifying exam, a passport-style photograph of the applicant, bank account details and an attested copy of the Aadhaar card. Only students with a Haryana domicile are eligible to apply, and the scholarship amount is credited directly into the student’s bank account once the application clears. Students can track a submitted application through the Saral Haryana portal’s ‘track application/appeal’ option by entering their application ID, and anyone with queries can call the department helpline on 0172-2566219 or 0172-2567009, or reach out to their district welfare officer.

The scheme is administered by the Department of Backward Classes and Economically Weaker Sections Welfare, Government of Haryana, and applies specifically to students from the state pursuing education from class 11 up to postgraduate studies.
