He Once Slept In A College Corridor For Six Months. Now His Sand Art Has 12 World Records
Sand artist Madhurendra Kumar grew up grazing goats and selling snacks at village fairs in Bihar; today he holds 12 world records and has performed in over 25 countries.
For nearly six months during college, Madhurendra Kumar slept in a corridor because he could not afford a hostel room. Today, the sand and leaf artist from East Champaran, Bihar, holds 12 world records and has taken his work to more than 25 countries.

Growing Up In East Champaran
Born on 5 September 1994 in Barwakala Village, Ghorasahan Block, near the India–Nepal border, Madhurendra was raised in a farming family. His father, Shivkumar Sah, is a farmer; his mother, Gena Devi, is a homemaker. His ancestral village is Bijbani in Bankatwa Block.
To keep studying, he took on work that included:
- Grazing goats from the age of five
- Selling curd door-to-door
- Weaving bamboo baskets
- Working in hotels and painting houses
- Selling vegetables and snacks at village fairs
- Sleeping in a college corridor for nearly six months because he could not afford a hostel room
Early Signs Of Talent
At three years old he was drawing birds and animals on the ground and on his slate. His late grandfather, Ramchandra Sah, said the boy would become a great artist. Without early formal training in sand art, Madhurendra used the banks of the Aruna River as his canvas.

The Bathinda Sculpture That Changed Everything
In December 2005 he created ‘Sarvadharm Ki Shahadat Dedicated to the Nation’ in Bathinda, Punjab — nearly 40 feet high and 100 feet long, built with about 200 tons of sand and close to fifty labourers over fifteen days. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s encouragement after seeing the work became the turning point of his career.

- Asian Book of World Records (2025) for creating 50 unique sand sculptures depicting the mythological Gaj-Graah battle during the Sonpur Fair
- UN Book of World Records (2026) for producing 50 sand sculptures illustrating the complete life journey of Lord Buddha from birth to Mahaparinirvana
- USA Book of World Records (2026) for creating more than 21,000 unique leaf artworks
- Forbes Book of World Records (2026) for producing more than 100 awareness-driven sand sculptures highlighting public welfare and social development

He has represented India at more than 50 international sand art festivals across 25-plus countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, China, Russia, Australia, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
International awards include:
