IIM Kozhikode opens its Kochi campus: a 40,000 sq ft answer to 30 years of growth
IIM Kozhikode has inaugurated a new six-storey, 40,000 sq ft campus in Kochi, built by Kochi Metro Rail Limited beside the Cochin University metro station.
IIM Kozhikode (IIM-K) inaugurated its new Kochi campus at Kalamassery on Saturday, marking the institute’s first major physical expansion outside its home city as it marks thirty years since its founding. The campus sits next to the Cochin University (Cusat) Metro Station on NH 66 and was developed by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).
The building spans 40,000 sq ft across six storeys and has been constructed using glass and pre-engineered steel. According to IIM-K officials, the design was chosen specifically to support both management education and executive learning, while leaving room for academic programmes to expand in future.
The campus was formally opened by IIM-K director Debashis Chatterjee, with KMRL managing director Loknath Behera present at the ceremony. Classrooms at the new site can seat more than 600 students at a time, and its multipurpose halls have been designed to double up as additional learning spaces when required.
Two programmes will run from the Kochi campus to begin with: the bachelor of management studies (BMS) and the executive post graduate programme (EPGP). IIM-K has said it intends to add further executive education offerings, specialised programmes, management development programmes, international collaborations and digitally enabled learning initiatives from the site over time.
‘This campus as an urban learning centre represents far more than a new campus; it reflects our vision of making management education more connected, accessible and future-ready,’ Chatterjee said at the inauguration. ‘Kochi, with its unique blend of industry, innovation and global connectivity, is the ideal location for this next phase of IIM-K’s journey.’
He added that the campus, arriving as the institute celebrates thirty years, lays the foundation for ‘a new generation of hybrid, technology-enabled learning’ while deepening IIM-K’s engagement with industry, society and the wider academic community.
