Speeding in Lucknow just got harder: AI cameras are already watching

Lucknow has become the first city in Uttar Pradesh to deploy AI-based interceptor vehicles, which issued 16,347 e-challans during a three-month trial.

Drivers speeding through Lucknow’s streets are now facing a watcher that doesn’t blink: AI-based interceptor vehicles that the city’s police commissionerate says have already issued 16,347 e-challans since being rolled out on trial.

The Lucknow police commissionerate has introduced the vehicles for automated speed enforcement, making it the first in Uttar Pradesh to do so, and officials say the trial has been running for the past three months.

Each vehicle is fitted with AI-based speed detection systems, high-resolution cameras and automatic video recording, alongside digital evidence capture linked to an integrated e-challan platform — the combination lets it identify a violation and generate a challan without an officer needing to pull the car over.

‘The system automatically detects speeding and other serious traffic violations, captures photographic and video evidence, and generates digital challans with minimal human intervention, ensuring transparency and reducing the possibility of disputes,’ said DCP traffic Raveena Tyagi, describing how the setup differs from conventional enforcement.

Officials said the interceptors are not limited to speed alone — they’re also being used to catch reckless driving, stunt-biking and illegal pressure horns, violations that regularly factor into road accidents in the city.
